Curriculum Overview

The innovative curriculum developed by O&Med, and fully accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education of the Dominican Republic, is designed to be delivered in English over a 6-year period, and is focused on:

  • Promoting active learning, interpersonal communication and team working skills.
  • Providing early exposure to community health challenges, epidemiology and public health advances.
  • Encouraging progressive autonomy in medical decision-making, leadership skills and the development of effective, efficient health care practices.
  • Establishing a basis for a life-long learning process, critical thinking and clinical judgment in medical problem solving.

O&M Medical School (O&Med), based on the highest standards of modern medical education, aims to develop a new generation of physicians who will excel not only in clinical knowledge and skills, but also in professionalism, ethics, research and social commitment, while respecting the culture and the needs of their communities. To achieve this mission, our fully integrated curriculum includes early exposure and longitudinal emphasis on Epidemiology and Public Health, Medical and Social Research, Information Technology, Community Engagement, Bioethics and Doctor-Patient Relationship.

O&Med aims to become a center of excellence in medical education for the Dominican Republic and the Caribbean, promoting the formation of culturally sensitive and socially engaged medical doctors, with strong foundations in public health, research methodology and bioethics. Aiming to train physicians able to address both the disease and the illness experience, as well as to adequately communicate and understand the patient within his or her personal, social and cultural circumstances, the O&Med curriculum promotes students’ early involvement at different levels of health prevention and treatment settings, while providing them with opportunities for positive interaction with patients from different social and cultural backgrounds.
